چکیده

In this paper, we propose a framework of motivations about why people participate in crowdsourcing without monetary incentives. The framework is based on the four pillars of crowdsourcing as well as the motivations referenced from collective action studies. We argue that crowdsourcing is not only about collective intelligence but is also similar to collective action, particularly when there is no monetary incentive. We discuss the commonalities between crowdsourcing and collective action. The framework provides a different research lens on crowdsourcing relative to the prevailing economic, psychology, and information system perspectives that form prior scholarship in this area. Analyzing the Costs of Collective Actions for Political, Administrative, and Economic Agents to Facilitate Investment

The processes of collective action of individuals within the government organization and the formation and modification of these processes in the private sector have fundamental differences with collective action. A collective action, either in the form of an activity or in the form of a reform of an entity, both has transaction costs for agents within the process. So, a collective action withi...

CrowdLang - First Steps Towards Programmable Human Computers for General Computation

Crowdsourcing markets such as Amazon’s Mechanical Turk provide an enormous potential for accomplishing work by combining human and machine computation. Today crowdsourcing is mostly used for massive parallel information processing for a variety of tasks such as image labeling. However, as we move to more sophisticated problem-solving there is little knowledge about managing dependencies between...

What "Crowdsourcing" Obscures: Exposing the Dynamics of Connected Crowd Work during Disaster

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that the current understanding of crowdsourcing may not be broad enough to capture the diversity of crowd work during disasters, or specific enough to highlight the unique dynamics of information organizing by the crowd in that context. In making this argument, this paper first unpacks the crowdsourcing term, examining its roots in open source development...

Understanding Continued Use of Crowdsourcing Systems: An Interpretive Study

Crowdsourcing as a model for distributed problem solving has been rapidly gaining in popularity. In investigating what drives the solvers to participate in crowdsourcing, the extant research has one-dimensionally only viewed the origins of motivation. While these studies have revealed that crowdsourcing systems’ use is driven by both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, they fall short of expla...
